Getting better with using her words

Filed Under Fourteen Months, Talking |

Some days I get really frustrated because B refuses to talk. Like if I tell her to repeat something, she just laughs at me. She is capable of saying quite a few words, but she would rather point to something and yell “Deedle deedle deedle deedle!” Finally today, I have not been telling her what anything is. I ask her, “What’s that?” It seems to make a difference.

So far today she has said a few new things- or at least things she hasn’t said in a long time-
“bir” (bird)
“baw” (ball)
“booh” (book)
“duh” (duck)

For some reason I thought she would be an early talker, I guess because she has always jabbered so much. But she was an early crawler and walker and then I read blogs of other babies her age who are still not walking, but have extensive vocabularies. I have to remind myself that they are each good at different things.

She absolutely refuses to say “more” now and will only sign it, though. Which is why I didn’t want her to learn signs to begin with, but someone else taught them to her, and I guess that’s just how it goes.

She has also learned to hug, and I can ask her for a hug and she comes and leans on me and rests her head on my shoulder or against my face. She doesn’t put her arms around me, but she lets me hug her, and doesn’t push me away.

If it makes you feel any better, Tia is JUST starting to talk…she’s two and a half! But, yeah, super early crawler and walker. Sloan was the exact same way. Landon is already behind both of them in mobility so I’m hoping for an early talker this time. Seriously, up until about three months ago, Tia had only about 15 words that she said consistently, and half of them were unintelligible unless you knew her. I was worried she had a hearing problem! Turns out she’s just stubborn!

Maybe because Natalie doesn’t say much…yet. LOL She sounds like such a sweetie. ;)

I’ve noticed that my kids always seemed to excel either in the verbal or the physical to begin with. Abby lost interest in talking after she learned to walk, and Becca was similar. But Hannah was a late walker, and a very early talker. I think they just choose one thing to concentrate on, and focus on that…

I’ve been told that as long as they understand language and are responding to you when you talk to them, that’s perfectly normal for language development. It sounds like to me that Bailey’s right on track! :)

Bailey is beautiful! I’m enjoying reading your posts. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my site. I’ll be calling my OBGYN to find out more about prescription prenatal vitamins.

A friend of mine also chose not to teach her little boy sign language because her husband was afraid it would hinder his verbal vocabulary. I can definitely see the logic in that. But if it makes you feel any more relaxed about B knowing a few signs, Scout says about half of the words she signs and also says some words rather than signing them. I’m sure every kid is different, but so far we haven’t seen that Scout’s signing has hindered her verbal development in any way so far. (of course she’s still young and who knows if I’ll have to eat my words….I guess time will tell)
