Probably not the best way to do it but I find templates I like then “customize” them.

YAY comments are working! =)
When I used wordpress, I found their support boards helpful in modifying templates. Some are easier to work with than others. When you look through the list of templates, pick one that says custom header. You can work with one that doesn’t have that feature, but it’s a pain.
I’m familiar w/ WordPress. If you’re looking at some themes, check out http://themes.wordpress.net/
There’s a bunch of good ones there, and you can customize any of them via their CSS file (if you’re familiar w/ CSS). Have fun!
