Opinion on Slings, please

Filed Under Baby Gear | 5 Comments

Okay, let me preface this by saying I have always been very skeptical about baby slings. Perhaps because a woman I know who is a little different and annoying uses one ALL THE TIME. It is also bright orange and in my opinion, tacky looking. Bright orange does not look good with everything….

But, my friend Mae wanted to go look at slings today. I didn’t have anything to do anyway, and I was kind of curious, so I went with her. We went to a store called Kangaroo Kids and I watched her try on a sling.

The sales lady was really nice. She showed her how to position the “baby” (she used a doll) in all different positions and tighten the sling. It actually looks kind of comfortable. So she tried it on me too because I was intrigued. She also told me that regular baby carriers can screw the baby’s hips up somehow from having something between their legs all the time. I don’t know if that’s true.

They are pretty easy to use. They are comfortable. I think the baby would like it better than a Baby Bjorn or typical baby carrier… but just on principle, I hate these things.

So here is my question: What did you use with your baby? Did you like it? Would you do it again? Or what do you plan on using with your baby when you have one? Opinions, please!

I’m thinking about getting one whenever we have another because I hate double strollers more, especially if one kid can walk.

One what, Kevin? Sling or Snugli?

Damn, I wrote a nice long, detailed reply and then it didn’t go through. So here’s the short version:
I tried the sling and didn’t like it for various reasons.
I bought a Bjorn and liked it until Layne got to 23lbs.
I don’t think you should buy either until you try them out with the actual baby.
You can borrow my Bjorn to see if you like it.
I bet someone would loan you a sling to try.
    I think that’s it.
    See you later!

I use a Snugli. And really… I haven’t had to use it too many times. But I do like it. I hear the sling isn’t so good for the back — but check w/ Jen about that, she could tell you for sure. Kind of the same principle of kids using back packs. They say they should carry them using both straps, rather than just one, because the weight pulls on only one side. I agree with Jill from Playgroup. You never really know until you have the real baby. :)
