First Ultrasound

Filed Under Pregnancy | 3 Comments

Today was our first doctor appointment and also our first ultrasound. When we arrived at the doctor’s, I REALLY had to pee but I wasn’t sure if “they” would need my pee. The nurse said yes, that I could leave it in a cup in the bathroom for them. So that was the kickoff to the visit.

Next, Jonathon and I were brought into the exam room where they took my blood pressure. Then I was told to strip down from the waist down (same routine as a yearly exam so far).

When the doctor came in, she got what my friend calls the Dildo Cam ready. The ultrasound was actually “transvaginal” instead of through the stomach. The doctor told me to lay back and scoot down on the table, and turned off the light. Jonathon later told me that I couldn’t see it from my angle, but the doctor actually put a condom on the ultrasound wand before she jammed it up there! Okay, so it wasn’t exactly jammed. It didn’t hit anything once it was in. Much more comfortable than a pap smear.

Then we saw the baby! The doctor actually said everything was PERFECT!

I know it kind of looks like a little jelly bean blob thing, but it was much clearer on the screen in the office. We also saw the heartbeat which was 177 BPM. I said, “Oh honey, it’s a girl!” The doctor laughed and said that yes, it was if we believed the old wives tales. I can always hope.

She said I was measuring right on track with my due date, so that stayed the same. Then we went into her office to talk. She mostly asked us about ten million questions about our families, health history, habits, etc. Also gave us lots of brochures and stuff to read. The only genetic testing type thing that she offered was the Cystic Fibrosis carrier screening, but we’re going to pass on it. We got the preregistration packet for the hospital which she said to fill out NOW before we forget so that we don’t have to register while I’m in labor. And she gave us a schedule of childbirth classes. Lots of reading material.

She also told us what our schedule of visits will be like- once a month for now until halfway through, then every two weeks, then after 36 weeks I will go every week. I think I can handle that.

The last thing we had to do was get all our paperwork to go over to the Quest lab and get my bloodwork done. Oh, and guess what? Another urine sample. Hi, I know I’m pregnant and I pee a lot, but this is a lot to ask! They took FIVE vials of blood from me that time, to check for HIV and all that crap that I know I don’t have, to find out my blood type, etc etc.

Right now I am just so amazed that we have a healthy (and I like to think happy) little baby growing in there. I am so thankful and we just feel so blessed. This was a wonderful day!

I had forgotten to tell you about all the blood they take on the first visit. That shouldn’t happen again until the gestational diabetes test at 20 plus weeks.

I’m learning so much here! And what’s the old wives tale? I don’t think I know that one. – Liz

Make sure to follow the directions about eating or not eating for your g.d. test- I didn’t eat when iw as supposed to eat- and they just wanted to “make sure” so i had to retest and fast the second time– a fasting pg woman is not a happy pg woman LOL
